Introduction
Salesforce provides specialized features for various business areas such as sales, marketing, and customer service. Your company has likely purchased editions tailored to your specific business needs and requirements. Salesforce offers a wide range of editions, which ultimately means that the prices vary as well. The functionality and licensing scope and quantity differ depending on the edition and subscription service you choose. In this post, we will explore the different editions of Salesforce and their features, as well as introduce the price ranges for each edition. We will also take a look at licenses.
Salesforce Products and Editions

Salesforce offers a variety of products that are currently in service. Sales, Service, Marketing, and Analytics are commonly mentioned and widely used in practical settings. Each product consists of different types or editions. While it's not possible to mention all the editions of every product, let's focus on Sales Cloud for now. Please note that the features and costs vary depending on the edition, so if you are considering implementation, it is essential to refer to the link below for detailed information.

Sales Cloud (As of June 2023)

- The feature differences between editions are actually quite significant, including objects, custom fields, and the number of validation rules you can create, etc.
- You can find detailed information about these feature differences in the PDF document with the following link:
https://www.salesforce.com/content/dam/web/ko_kr/www/documents/pricing/DS_SalesCloud_EdCompare_KR.pdf - Product/service contracts are generally based on an annual commitment. However, it is worth noting that the Essentials edition, which is primarily used by startups and small businesses, allows for monthly billing, perhaps considering the specific needs of such organizations.
- All editions support mobile functionality, although Salesforce is primarily used on PCs rather than mobile devices for day-to-day operations.
- There is a restriction on downgrading your current edition. To perform a downgrade, you would need to export all your data and then purchase a new edition, migrating your data to the new edition. Therefore, it is important to choose your edition carefully, considering this limitation.
Free Editions

- There isn't a significant difference between Playground and Developer Edition.
- Playground is more focused on Trailhead, serving as a dedicated environment for completing Trailhead modules. If you're using it solely for Trailhead purposes, you can create a Playground and use it, deleting and recreating it if any conflicts arise.
- When using Developer Edition, you'll need to sign up and create a new instance. It may be a bit more challenging to proceed because it doesn't have the default settings required by Trailhead.
- Both Playground and Developer Edition have a default lifespan of 6 months. However, if you simply log in before the expiration, it will be automatically extended, allowing you to effectively use them indefinitely.
License
Licenses determine the level of access that users have to the features and functionalities of your org. In other words, it means that based on the product and edition selection explained earlier, let's assume that functionalities AH are available. License A allows access to functionalities AC, while License B grants access to functionalities D~H. Each license is further customized through profiles, permission sets, the role hierarchy, and other configurations.
- Each user must have exactly one license assigned to them.
- When a user is deactivated, the corresponding permission set assigned to that user is also removed.

License Status on Your Organization

Setup -> Company Information -> User Licenses.
During practice, it may not matter much, but in a professional setting, creating users indiscriminately can quickly lead to hitting limits. Purchasing additional licenses can be costly. It is crucial to avoid creating unnecessary accounts in the first place. Once a user is created, it cannot be deleted. Therefore, it is important to deactivate them appropriately.
User Freeze and Deactivate

Setup -> User -> Select a user you want -> Freeze -> Edit -> Unselect Active -> Save
What is Freeze? It means preventing a user from logging in. Typically, if there are a certain number of login failures, the user will be automatically frozen (this can also be configured). Does Freeze result in the user becoming inactive? No, it does not (it's a different concept). Freeze can be applied at any time regardless of the user's current status. However, if the user is assigned to certain areas, they cannot be immediately set to an inactive state. For this reason, Freezing is a prerequisite before proceeding to an inactive state. Only when the user is in an inactive state is the license secured.
In this post, we have discussed Salesforce's products, editions, and licenses. The range of products, editions, and license types that Salesforce offers is extensive, and I haven't encountered the majority of them. As I tried to focus on information that I have gained from my experience, it could not deal with other products and editions much, which would make me just copy and paste here to write a post.
I initially planned to cover profiles as well. However, I believe it would be better to address objects, fields, profiles, and hierarchies together, so I will continue the discussion in the next post.
